How to Install an eSIM on Android
Learn the common Android eSIM setup path, what varies by manufacturer and carrier, and how to prepare safely before a Europe trip.
Expect the menu names to vary
Android is not one phone model. Your settings labels, QR scanner, dual-SIM controls, and transfer choices may differ by maker, regional software, carrier customization, and Android version. Use the provider’s instructions and your device maker’s official support pages as the primary route.
On a current Google Pixel, Google documents the new-plan path as Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM. During setup, it may instead offer Download SIM. This is useful orientation, not a promise that a Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, or operator-supplied phone will show the same words.
Set up with a safe preflight
Before adding anything, confirm the phone supports eSIM in its exact regional version and that it is not locked to another carrier. Use a secure Wi-Fi connection, charge the device, and have your provider’s QR code or activation details ready. Keep the original email and order number. A QR code can be sensitive activation material, so do not share it in screenshots or public support posts.
Add the plan through Settings or the provider’s approved app. Follow the prompts carefully and enter a confirmation code only when the provider asks for it. Google notes that if a phone was not bought from the carrier, the user should contact the carrier to confirm eSIM support and the device IMEI or device ID. That is a good reminder that device support and plan support are separate checks.
Choose the correct data line
After installation, visit the SIM settings. Give each line a clear label, choose the intended mobile-data line, and inspect calls and SMS defaults. A travel eSIM may only provide data, so do not select it for ordinary calls or texts unless its plan explicitly includes them. Before departing, turn off unwanted mobile-data switching if your phone provides that option and you want stricter control.
If the plan cannot be added, pause rather than repeatedly retrying. See how to fix eSIM activation problems and revisit the exact-phone compatibility check. For a two-line travel setup, continue with using a home SIM and travel eSIM.
